You know, I just noticed now that this forum is about Apache for Windows. Not very bright of me, coming in here and posting a question about Apache running under linux. I think I'd better go hunt for a more appropriate forum. Anyone have suggestions as to the best one to use?

No problem - per the Apache Lounge Forum Index page Quote: | The forums, although primarily committed to Win environments, is about Apache in general. All flavors of OS are welcome here. |
Your mod_rewrite problem seems independent of the OS you are using.
There is a mod_rewrite forum. Their FAQs page may be helpful to you.
