Topic: Changing computer name

Computer Details:

Apache version: 2.2
Windows XP Pro SP2
Browser: IE 6

I have apache up and running on my local machine. I then changed my computer name to something different. I restarted my computer and obviously the apache service wouldnt start. I went to the httpd.conf file and searched for my old computer name and replaced it with my new computer name. I then could go to my browser and go to http://oldcomputername and http://newcomputer name and both worked. I uninstalled apache, deleted the program folder that it left, searched the registry and then reinstalled. same thing happened. Has anyone ever come across this issue or know any troublshooting steps i can take. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A couple of ideas to try:

Be sure to clear your browser cache, in case the response from the oldcomputername was cached.
In IE this is called [Tools] [Internet Options...] [Delete Files...]

Close all your browser windows (they share a single in-memory cache), then start up the browser and try again.

Try
C:> ping oldcomputername
from a DOS window to see if the old name responds. It shouldn't.

Check that you do not have a C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file which contains the old computer name.

Thanks for the reply Tom. I did as you said in deleting the cache and closing all browsers. I then tried and it still did it. I went to a different computer and tried pinging and it was able to ping both computer names and gave the same IP. Which is REALLY strange. I am going to delete the host file and I'll let you know what i come up with.
