Hello,

I am going through a report from early 2000.
IT-archeology .

So I guess this site was using apache 1.3 (version 1.3 -release 1998-06-06). In the report I am reading from back then (2000-08-04) the site claims to have 800.000 visitors in a month - they do not report on which tool they are using.

If anybody in this group could help me out.
What tools would the site be using at that time 1999 and 2000. Would that be a tool from Apache ? and if so, where there tools are around back then that could measure unique visitors ?

best, i

You could use awstats[1]. That tool can read those logs files.

Hi James,

Thank you for your reply.
Seeing on wiki that awstats was release in may 2000.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWStats .

They could have used that, maybe for the rest of the year - but not as early as 1999.

I should find some remnants after that program if that has been used.
doing the following search - i do not find anything.

Code:
root:/# find . -name awstats.pl

Hi Inkimar,
of cuase you have to install awstats. Also note that awstats runs on apache.

Code:

sudo apt-get install awstats

See https://tecadmin.net/install-awstats-apache-log-analyzer-on-ubuntu/

If awstats isn't the right tool: See https://www.tek-tools.com/cloud/top-apache-log-analyzer-tools

Hi James,

You are misundstanding me.
I am walking through a service from 1999, looking at it, seeing its dependency - the site claims to have had a large number of visitors during 1999/2000/2001 and I want to check that claim as in (1) What services where around back in 1999 to monitor the apache server and unique visitors.

You ask for a monitor, sure ? Or a log analyzer ?

Awstats is a log analyzer. it reads the log files and makes nice reports. For example visitors. Awstats supports 1.3 log files.
