After a lot of trial and error (and a little help), I finally got the substitute command to work correctly.
I really needed some debug level logging for this module to help diagnose the problem; but I couldn't get it to work. Does it exist; and if so, how is it enabled?

| mod_substitute has no debug logging so that is probably why you got nothing for your troubles. It has just one error level message. |
