This weekend I moved to Apache 2.4.3 on my main web server. Everything seemed to migrate fine and I switched to the 2.4.x version of mod_fcgid. I am seeing several of these warnings in my error log:
[Mon Sep 03 13:17:07.424528 2012] [fcgid:warn] [pid 4320:tid 7088] (OS 10054)An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. : [client 184.9.228.247:49758] mod_fcgid: ap_pass_brigade failed in handle_request_ipc function, referer: http://www.website.com
I found this post on the Apache developers mailing list, but it didn't seem to have an answer (or at least one I understood):

Is this something to worry about? |

Updated to 2.4.3 (from 2.4.2) today. And checked the error log after restarting service. And noticed the same errors. But they where from yesterday, so it seems my server is running with that error for a long time. Never noticed weird behaviour or heard complaints from customers. So I think it can harm.... |

I'm back using Apache 2.2.22 on my main server now. When our concurrent Apache requests topped 200 today, around 100 php-cgi.exe processes spawned and "mod_fcgid: can't apply process slot for c:/php/php-cgi.exe" started repeating in the error log.
I'm using the same mod_fcgid settings on each version, so I don't know what went wrong. With the Apache 2.2.22 configuration we've topped 300 to 400 concurrent requests with no mod_fcgid errors. |
