A presentation from Jim, a non-windows developer at ASF.
Wondering about relating the server so much to cloud, looks marketing talk and/or buzz.
Download at the Addional download page here.

Well the paper doesn't say exactly, but it says: proxy. And that is the clue (with mod_heartbeat and mod_lbmethod_heartbeat). The primary use of mod_lbmethod_heartbeat is to direct traffic to the least loaded server in a reverse proxy pool. With mod watchdog you can have a second apache in failover position aka hot standby.
So it is bitter that this don't work on windows (yet).
So far apache supports various protocols: HTTP, HTTPS, CONNECT, FTP, AJP, FastCGI, SCGI, WSGI (soon'ish).
Do not forget mod_proxy_html to correct bad html fro mthe backend servers. Also nice is the sticky session support. OK that is since the later 2.2 series.
There is also the live changing possible via balancer-manager. Than adding balancers during running time without restarting apache.
Bad that this feature also does NOT work on windows (any more). |

They do, at least watchdog, heartbeat and heartmonitor work for me.I hammered on the list to get them to work. They've been working in AH builds since I figured out how to fix it, this goes back to at least 2.3.9.
I have not tried setting up a bunch of back ends to test lbmethod modules. It does seem bybusiness doesn't, or didn't work, via reports I've seen. |
