I had often problems to stop mysql-nt.exe, if not installed as service.
If you own XP Pro / 2003 server / Vista you can stop myql using taskkill from commandline or from startbutton => Run

taskkill /F /IM mysqld-nt.exe

If you not own XP Pro taskkill can be downloaded here. It also runs under 2000 and 2000 server. NOT using it under Win 9x or 3.x or ME!

sysinternals have good alternative utilities to use
