I Build with Visual Studio® 2008 aka VC9 (also zlib and openssl).
The supported Windows I have bumped up, this speed things up at run time some small bit. And also we would not miss functionalities that are defined in the newer Windows versions.
Minimum system required:
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista
Windows Server 2003 SP1
Windows XP SP2
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
Interesting new in VC9 is:
The compiler contains tuning for the Intel Core microarchitecture during code generation. This tuning is on by default and cannot be disabled as it also helps Pentium 4 and other processors.

Be sure to install the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, see ReadMe.txt

Your VC9 build and the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package both install and run on Windows 2000 SP4.
It seems to run OK - about the same speed as the VC8 build and with lower memory use - but I haven't tested it very much yet.
Unfortunately the Visual Studio 2008 C++ compiler cannot be installed on Windows 2000
- so people who like to build and debug Apache on Win2k (...like me...) are out of luck.
It is interesting that the new VC9 runtime library MSVCR90.dll, no longer loads MSVCRT.dll into memory like MSVCR80.dll did.
The exe's and .dll's produced by VC9 appear to be somewhat smaller too.
