Righteous post, my friend. I appreciate this, completely.
While this is a great, in-depth dive into installing apache/php/mysql, I've had problems with my browser not being able to find 'localhost'.

I installed apache by copying the contents into its own directory, created the index page in its own directory, pointed DocumentRoot to the index directory, and when I start the httpd service, it says "unable to connect" and "unable to find 'localhost'". It also does the same thing when I enter in the standard 127.0.0.1 address for it. Tried to resolve it by editing the hosts file, uncommenting the line which reads, "127.0.0.1 localhost". No beans. Any help with that?
