I downloaded PHP and MYSQL, then Apache HHTP Server 2. I chose regular service (Port 80) and regular installation. When I START Apache, the Error Log shows it is running (but the Command Prompt screen opens and closes with no message). When I STOP APache, it says "Apache is stopping". When I type in http://localhost or htp://127.0.0.1, the Windows tab shows it connecting - but it does not connect. I tried this with my Avira Home Premium anti-virus software off (thinking it may use port :80).

Running WIndows XP with Service pack 3.

I did NOT check the signature - I have the signature file (U Wisconsin mirror), but have not figured out yet how to check it (I did know once!) - apologies for that, will try to do this next to make sure the installation was OK.

You may start ApacheMonitor.exe in the apache\bin folder.

I have resolved the problem - downloaded WAMP2 and started the Apache service first! All is well - but I need to learn how the Server, MySql and PHP interact, how to run and administer WAMP properly.

Thanks for your reply.
