Anyone know where I can find some good instructions on how to do this? I have it installed as a module and it seems to be pretty slow taking about 10sec for simple PHP pages.

A good working example with PHP over fcgid can you find here: http://www.apachelounge.com/viewtopic.php?p=7614

PHP over fcgid has much more performance.
