flowchart and logic including the purpose of all the vierd functions?

The best resource if you want to develop Apache modules is Nick Kew's "The Apache Modules Book", ISBN: 978-0132409674.
No flowcharts - but it explains much of the organization and purpose of Apache and its various modules. This is a book for Apache module programmers - not one for Apache administrators.
